Canada Street Cycle Way

The Canada Street Cycle bridge links Canada Street in the Auckland CBD to the old Nelson Street Offramp in the central motorway junction.

The expressive 160m long structure contains over 250 tonnes of steel. The triangular othotropic bridge deck provides a unique geometric challenge as it tapers and winds it's way from the offramp to the east abutment, taking into account precamber and a change in elevation.

This project won the Steel Construction New Zealand biannual "Excellence in Steel Construction" award for projects over $3m, as well as the Supreme Overall Winner award for the best project over all categories.

The judges citation for the award reads;
This is the only curved triangular orthotropic bridge in the world. The Canada Street Bridge’s sinuous, elegant and simple aesthetic belies the technical complexity in its design, fabrication and construction. The well thought through project ticked multiple boxes, including its speed of construction, cost effectiveness and minimal impact on the environment.”

“The judges were blown away with the execution and delivery of this complex and striking structure. The iconic Canada Street Bridge is a fantastic reflection of the versatility of steel in building and infrastructure projects, and illustrates the skill and expertise that we have in New Zealand to produce a project of this high calibre. The Canada Street Bridge does the industry proud.”

‘The cycleway is a Jewel in the Auckland crown, in fact more than that, it is the most ambitious cycle project ever to open’
